A person’s partner in marriage which includes same-sex marriages. The marriage must be valid both under the laws of the jurisdiction where it took place and under Canadian law.
A person who is living/cohabitating in a relationship with another person (opposite or same sex), and has done so continuously for a period of at least one year. Short absences for valid reasons are allowed.
Where two people are in a marriage-like relationship but are not married and have not lived together for a period of at least one year due to exceptional circumstances that are beyond the couples control such as local customary laws and other impediments.
An adult (18+ years old) Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor his parents or grandparents if they qualify to certain conditions or criteria. You must answer the following questions:
- Your family unit consists of how many individuals (spouse and children including yourself)?
- How many parents or grandparents you wish to sponsor?
- How much income did you and your spouse jointly declared in the last 3 years in your federal income tax returns?

- Who can sponsor? Must be over 18, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, Undischarged bankrupt (exceptions apply for Quebec): No criminal background (with certain exceptions)
- What is the minimal Income needed to sponsor?: There is no minimal income requirement but you cannot be benefitting from social welfare.
- When can I apply?: There are no quotas in place for this type of application. You may therefore sponsor your spouse or partner as soon as you qualify.
- Who can be included in a sponsorship application?: our application can include your spouse or partner as well as any dependent children from your current or previous relationship(s).
- What are the Processing times?: The average processing delays are 12 months for both in and outside Canada applications.
